the secret to great cleavage?

the secret to great cleavage?

for as long as breasts and showing off breasts have been de rigueur, having cleavage–and great cleavage at that–has been the ultimate commodity. women have been torturing themselves for centuries to attain a sumptuous bosom. but as the corset has seen some colorful updates over time (check out the ad for the boob clamp below), it seems the answer has been lying in our lingerie drawer all along:  our bras. yes, the secret to a great divet is in our regular, everyday bra, but it’s how you wear them, or rather, when you where them that makes all the difference.

according to british tv host mariella frostup, her great dip is a result of wearing her bra to bed. “the best piece of advice i got was from paula yates,” frostup reveals. “i was moaning about my breasts and she said: ‘never, ever have a breast job. just wear a bra in bed.’ that’s what i do. i haven’t taken it off for 15 years.”

i don’t know about you, but just the thought of wearing a bra to bed makes me uncomfortable. the first thing i do when i come home after a long, hard day is take it off so that i can let loose and not feel so confined or restricted. maybe when i was in high school and still yearning for cleavage of my very own i would have tried it (honestly, i probably did), but the whole torture-for-the-sake-of-beauty thing really isn’t for me.

and i’m not so sure that her claim holds much weight. in looking for a photo to share with this post, there are nary a jpeg of the brit-by-way-of-norway showing off some super cleavage–she’s actually pretty covered up (in a chic way) on the regular. not that there is anything wrong with taking advice from a seemingly wholesome personality, it just seems a bit odd that someone who clearly isn’t known for revealing decolletege a) has cleavage advice, and b) feels the need to wear a bra to bed to keep perky that which she is so modest in showing off.

while the daily mail pondered just which types of bras would be most comfortable and suitable to wear while catching some z’s, i’m wondering about the little wives tale i heard as a girl that linked excessive bra wearing to breast cancer…? perhaps it has something to do with the reason dr. elizabeth vaughan has been an advocate of going bra-free 24/7 for the past 25 years: “breasts are loaded with lymphatic tissue, which doesn’t have a pump like  the heart,” says vaughan. “movement and massage help move toxins along our lymphatic system, and anything that slows down the clearing of these toxins will increase the risk of developing symptoms and/or disease.

“bras that restrict movement of the breasts appear to increase congestion,” she adds. “slowing down clearance of toxins from the breasts will increase the rate women develop breast diseases.”

still on the fence about whether or not you should hit the hay with your girls strapped in? the dm also name drops marilyn monroe as a busty broad who was rumored to have reigned her puppies in at night. you know, just in case you lived by the what-would-marilyn-do mantra.
